Description of the Book:
Have you ever felt lost? Like something is missing no matter how much you achieve? It’s as though a piece of you is missing, nothing can fill the void. You see you’re a product of many things. Each aspect of your identity is important. You remind yourself of this but still lose yourself. Then one day as if by magic, you land an opportunity that changes you for the better.
This book is about identity and how it is shaped by the opportunities and experiences that we are exposed to. It is about all of the days that make us and the ones that almost break us.
They call me by my name here!
Author's Name: Mayussa Abbas About the Author: Mayussa Abbas (May-US-Aah A-BAAs) has spent a very long-time telling people how to pronounce her name. She still sounds it out today, May like the month, us, as in you and me, aah. She ends with a sigh of relief, but it does the trick. Her surname is less problematic. That sticks because she tells people she is a boss. The ultimate girl boss and then drops an imaginary mic. She hasn't always been that bold. The West Midlands born writer moved to London as a child and shied away from correcting people because of her accent. 'They call me by my name here!' is Mayussa's first published book, it is loosely based on her own experiences as a second-generation immigrant and a first-generation graduate. The collection of poems makes reference to how she has grown to embrace her name, accent and various other aspects of her personal identity.
