Description of the Book:
No one is invincible. Mental illness can happen to anyone. Not in the plan is an insightful collection of poems describing with a raw honesty, the thoughts, feelings and emotions of a doctor battling with a number of psychological problems after being pushed to their limit as they dealt with juggling their career and balancing a family with additional needs. The words provide a vivid insight into how it feels to spiral into depression and at times that life is no longer worth living. They also describe a life-long battle with food and an eating disorder, the painful experience of “coming out” having hidden for years along with poems detailing the mixed feelings of intense love and yet also anger, resentment and guilt experienced whilst caring for a child that has challenging behaviour. If you are struggling with mental health issues or are a carer of a child with additional needs struggling with your own feelings the poems aim to bring comfort, to make you feel you are not alone and that there are others who understand your suffering and the battles that you endure.

Author's Name: Claire Hirst About the Author: Claire Hirst is a doctor who lives in South Wales with her family. Claire has struggled with mental illness since her late teens /early twenties but kept this remarkably well hidden from everyone for over twenty years for fear of stigma and discrimination. She always found comfort in writing, initially in the form of journaling. Several years ago, following a period of worsening of her mental illness, she started writing poetry and found this a way of helping to process and find some release from difficult, complex often painful emotions that she was feeling.
