This collection of poems is at once deeply personal, seemingly pulled from the pages of a journal and expansive in scope. A world contained in an intimate oyster shell. A sense of exhaustion set to the tune of heartbreak and writers' block. It’s the feeling of being in one place but so definitively in another that for a moment you lose sense of who or what you are. Imagined possibilities, futures promised and gilded, yearning for something new something different as in the titular poem. A looking back in meanness, unbridled rage coming up in wisps of smoke. There is a dissonance in remembered places with what they have become, as in My Jacket Is Made Of Thorns. Where does one find a sense of belonging if not in one’s own skin, if not in that which is and always has been known? It’s the shattering of the hard boiled egg of perceived truth. An opening of a new world whilst being critical of the one embodied in The Torment of Tantalus.
